This book is not for beginners, to begin with. You must already have knowledge of portrait photography, lighting (studio) and differences among men, women, and child photography for you to appreciate this book. For example, masculine photography requires harsher lighting or more contrast which the book tackles in the first few pages.The book is divided into sections where men are photographed in different environment situations. There are modeling section, eyewear section, refined men section, muscle magazine section, etc. This is not a technical book where you can see photos captioned with camera settings and flash or strobe strength and speeds. It gives description how to achieve such look and feel for the topic is it is presenting. I rated it 4 stars because this is a small book and the fonts are also small. Otherwise, this book is very informative and educational.
Jeff Rojas' Photographing Men is an excellent, thorough guide to create effective, powerful portraits of men in different settings. Rojas gets down to business straight away in a manner that provides essential subjects involved with portraiture, such as, identifying face shapes and considerations in using complimentary lighting to bring out the best across a wide variety of subjects. I also own his book, Photographing Women, written in a similar manner that is as effective as Photographing Men.I highly recommend purchasing both of these books as a most useful guide to excellent portraiture.
This is a solid, concise, and well written how-to book full of excellent photography and shot diagrams. Jeff lays it all out in easy to read language that allows you to reproduce the techniques, set up and shoot your own shots, and then finish them with his tips for post-processing. This is one of the best instructional photo books currently available and the only one I know of that deals specifically with posing and shooting men. Highly recommended if you're a people photographer plus it's a good bang for the buck.
As a full time professional photographer who is mostly shooting women, I would highly recommend picking this up as its a fresh look at photographing men. Jeff's book helped break the metal limits i had to posing and lighting when it came to male subjects. I feel more confident & creative having read this.
I'm a fan of Jeff's work and his KISS approach to lighting. This is a great reference for anyone looking to create flattering portraits of men with minimal lighting.
Jeff Rojas is producing extraordinary portraits, and in this book, he is kind enough to share some of his techniques. Every photographer should have this book on hand.
This book was very well written. Jeff explained all the techniques in very digestible pieces. I was nervous with taking portraits of men, but this book gives you an excellent foundation. High praises to Jeff Rojas.
As all of his other books, this book is very informative and has been a great help.
