About the Author
Natalie Diaz: Natalie Diaz was born and raised on the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation in Needles, California. Having played professional basketball for four years in western Europe and Asia, Diaz returned to the states to complete her MFA at Old Dominion University in 2007. She has received the Nimrod/Hardman Pablo Neruda Prize and her work has appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including Prairie Schooner, Nimrod International, and North American Review. She lives in Surprise, Arizona.

The poems either knocked me out, had me on the verge of tears, or had me nodding in solidarity with the subject matter (a brother's addiction).Many of the poems are heartbreaking and anger inducing. A couple makes you smile and laugh. Overall, most of the poetry depicts the author's family struggle with her brother's addiction to meth and the ways each member copes with his bizarre behavior or doesn't. The poems are a description of the family dynamics surrounded and influenced by religion, cultural history, and tribal life.With 103 pages of intensity, I found I could not read more than two or three poems in a row and afterward I had to journal or decompress in some way. The author's use of imagery and words in English, Spanish, and the Mojave language spun visceral images; I was immersed in another world for a few minutes.This is one of those poetry books you will re-read, place on your 'favorite books' shelf, and never lend out.
One of the most detailed description of loving someone who's "god" is something that poisons all that is good in their heart. I found Natalie's writing exceptionally intimate, loving, and creative. This is one of the FEW books I've ever come across that I read twice within two days. She captures the soul of the observer. It was as if I was reading one of my journals ... unwritten in my soul.
The thread running through the poems are family. Specifically, they are about how the family copes with the brother's drug addiction; how a loved son takes up a lot of mental space and time and money. A strong debut, the hope is for the speaker of the implied narrative "I" will be able to escape the worries of her brother. But you can never escape your family (not that anyone would ever want to).
Diaz cuts to the quick of intense feelings about the suffering, daunting love, dashed hopes of a family and a people--Native People. Her images burrowed into my thinking for days. I longed for relief from the pain and kept close to my heart whatever I could find of love and endurance and resilience in her carefully crafted memories.
This book of poetry is amazing - my favorite poems were about her brother and her family, and the struggles that her family has endured because of her brother's addiction. I also loved her poems about what it is like to grow up as a Native child away from tribal lands. Natalie Diaz captures the difficulties of Urban Native life, and I commend her for it.
i think a lot of modern poetry is much too personal. making it uninteresting to the average reader. this was not. there were lines which were memorable. downhill triolets. And death eats angels, I guess, because I haven't seen an angel fly through this valley ever. and that quote was hard to choose. there are many many more.
Amazing, fierce, and often disturbing poetry. It’s deeply affecting work, although in particular the poems about her brother’s meth addiction can be very difficult to read. Really beautiful work.
When My Brother Was an Aztec A "new" writer's first volume of poetry and it dazzles! This is a small gem giving an insight into the current situation of some of America's lesser known first tribes, the Mohave people. I'm a lifelong student of the ancient southwestern inhabitants; I'm an archaeologist and writer. I still am interested in the people of the mountains, deserts and canyons that our (European-based)ancestors tried so hard to eradicate. This is a great read and an education - that combination is quite an accomplishment for a first-time published in book form poet. I'm very much looking forward to the future work of Ms. Diaz.
